Petrobras makes new discovery in Brazil's Piracuca field

Petroleo Brasileiro has notified the Brazilian government petroleum industry regulator Agencia Nacional do Petroleo (ANP) that it has found oil in a well drilled offshore Brazil in the Piracuca Field, Block BM-S-7.

The ANP said today that Petrobras achieved the oil discovery on testing the well, 4BRSA781SPS, which was drilled to a total depth of 5,175 meters (16,979 ft) at a site in the southern part of the Santos Basin in shallow waters of 214 meters depth with the semisubmersible drilling rig Pride South Atlantic. It said that the field was originally discovered in April 2009 by Petrobras and its partner in the concession, Repsol-YPF, and that the field was declared commercial with estimated recoverable reserves of approximately 550 million boe.

The operator notified ANP of the find on the Piracuca Field in accordance with government regulations requiring oil companies operating in Brazil to inform the agency whenever an exploratory well encounters indications of oil, gas, or condensates within 48 hours of the discovery. The disclosure is routine and does not signify a commercial discovery.

Petrobras is the operator of Block BM-S-7 and the Piracuca discovery with 63% interest, with Repsol holding the remaining 37%. It lies about 200 km south of the city of Santos.
